Wells Highlights
Wells nestles on the southern edge of the Mendip Hills Area of Outstanding Beauty – described as England’s smallest city, justified by its magnificent 13th century cathedral – just over 11,000 people live here. Wells is regularly used for film and television shoots including Poldark, Hot Fuzz, Wolf Hall and The Huntsman. The centre of Wells – just a five minute walk away from the School – remains remarkably unspoilt and features many historic buildings, lively markets, restaurants, coffee shops, hotels and more…
Wells Cathedral
The earliest English Cathedral to be built in the Gothic style, Wells Cathedral is also the home of Antony Gormley‘s sculpture ‘Doubt’ for 18 months.
The Bishop's Palace
Surrounded by a breath-taking moat, visitors can cross a flagstone drawbridge, walk under the portcullis and experience a true hidden gem.
Vicars' Close
Dating back to the 14th Century, Vicars’ Close is the oldest street in Europe with all of its buildings intact.
Wells High Street
One of the Guardian’s 10 best independent UK high streets, Wells has a thriving market (Wednesdays and Saturdays) and a number of charming shops and cafés.
